Grey Sleeveless coat (tunic)
Rachel's Story
I have always admired batik fabrics, but for the longest time, I limited myself to making only my three-tiered skirts and big shirts out of them. However, in 2012, while attending the Summer Arts Festival in Alaska, I decided to try something new. I collected a variety of grey and brown batiks. I have no idea why I picked this color and shape theme, but that was what spoke to me. Geometry, which is a branch of mathematics dealing with lines, angles, curves, and shapes, has its roots in art and design. I considered this when I selected approximately 20 geometric shapes, including squares, circles, rectangles, ovals, triangles, pentagons, hexagons, octagons, diamonds, and stars. I also included a snake for good measure. All the shapes were made using the grey batiks, with the brown fabric used to set them off. To add a pop of color, I included red horizontal bars. I modified my A-line coat pattern to incorporate the geometric pattern. I also added small red and grey buttons to the tunic for embellishment. For closures, I used a variety of larger grey buttons.
