Chinese Shibouri Boxy Coat

Rachel's Story

This coat’s name took on a life of its own. I call it Chinese Shibori Boxy Coat AKA The Bed Cover Coat. A while back I attended the Monterey Jazz Festival. At one of the festival booths, a fellow was selling Chinese shibori items. When I spied this fabric, I told my friend this would make a great coat. The vendor said, “It’s a bed cover.” I responded, “It would make a great coat.” He said again, “It’s a bed cover,” then I said again, “It would make a great coat.” He responded, “It will make a great coat!”. My response was, “I will take it.”  My original plan was to cut it up, but after really looking at the Shibori designs and wanting to highlight them, I chose to use the fabric as a whole cloth. My boxy coat pattern was a natural foundation for my design. I decided to embellish using red accents and for the lining, I chose African fabric and a Hawaiian print.
