Dots and Circles

Rachel's Story

I love polka dots and have been playing with them for many years. This coat is a continuation of that fascination. I framed a variety of dots of different scales and working with a repeated block, carried out the theme of Dots and stripes. I used a design inspired by quilter Sarah Bond's great-grandmother, Anna Gibson Bond. I saw Sarah's quilt in Upstate New York and it spoke to me. I loved how her ancestor, Anna, designed the quilt. It was in rows of rectangles. I created a grid and set up my fabrics in the coat in the same pattern as her great-grandmother’s quilt. I used stripe button closure and polka dot buttons on the sleeve. I appliqued dots where she had a fabric with dots and added the sashing. Note the double-stacked buttons.
