African Strings
Rachel's Story
I have been collecting vintage patterns for many years. I appreciate the fit that you get when working with these patterns as well as some of the interesting details. Note the neckline detail. I enjoy getting together with a friend at the beginning the year to do something creative.
In January 2005 my friend Gwen and I were hanging out in my studio and decided to play with the diamond shape and African fabrics. I chose to do a series of repeat blocks. While it may not look like it, there is a pattern. Immediately surrounding the diamond is African fabric, next a solid and so on. I enjoy playing with the color turquoise, so I decided to use a turquoise jacquard as the accent. I had wanted to use turquoise buttons as fasteners, but after looking for an entire year across the country, and not finding the size I wanted, I decided to use covered buttons. I lined the coat with an African fabric and silky material.
